Self Portraits
Through drawing, I try to unpack, catalog, and understand myself. In the past, this has meant exploring my relationship to the town where I grew up and its role in the production of atomic weapons. Through drawing and illustration, I have used place, history, and memory as ways of examining how external forces shape personal identity.
More recently, I have turned that same process of observation inward, cataloging my own face through a series of daily digital self-portraits. Over the course of a year, I am attempting to map the subtle ways my face, and my perception of myself, changes over time. Each portrait is made quickly and is intentionally messy, distorted, or damaged in some way, reflecting my emotional and psychological state at that particular moment.
The resulting images are less concerned with accurately depicting what I look like than with documenting what it feels like to inhabit myself. Through repetition, imperfection, and accumulation, the work becomes a record of time, emotion, and the ongoing process of trying to understand who I am.
